What Is an FUE Hair Transplant?

A Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) hair transplant is a modern surgical technique that involves removing individual hair follicles from the back and sides of the scalp (the donor area) and transplanting them into areas affected by hair loss (the recipient area).

FUE is commonly used to treat male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia) and is suitable for restoring the hairline, temples, crown, or diffuse thinning. Because the transplanted follicles are genetically resistant to hair loss, the results are permanent, allowing you to move on from hair loss with confidence.

At our Nottingham hair transplant clinic, every FUE procedure is carried out by a dedicated hair transplant surgeon under a strict one-patient-per-day policy. We do not delegate critical stages of surgery to technicians. This surgeon-performed approach ensures complete focus, bespoke planning, and results that look natural now and as you age.

Before surgery, you’ll receive:

  • A consultation with both a patient advisor and your hair transplant surgeon
  • A personalised treatment plan and transparent cost breakdown
  • Complimentary hair loss medication (where clinically appropriate)
  • Structured follow-up appointments after your procedure

How an FUE Hair Transplant Works

An FUE hair transplant is a precise, minimally invasive procedure designed to permanently restore hair to areas affected by thinning or baldness. When performed by an experienced surgeon, FUE delivers natural-looking results with minimal scarring and a relatively short recovery period.

The process begins by identifying healthy, permanent hair follicles in the donor area, typically the back and sides of the scalp. These donor hair follicles are genetically resistant to hair loss, making them ideal for transplantation.

Using specialist micro-punch instruments, the surgeon carefully extracts individual follicular units one by one. This method avoids the need for a linear incision, meaning there are no stitches and only tiny, dot-like scars that are virtually undetectable once healed.

Once extracted, the follicles are meticulously prepared and preserved to maintain viability. The surgeon then creates precise micro-incisions in the areas experiencing hair loss, carefully controlling the angle, direction, and density of each incision to replicate natural hair growth patterns.

Finally, each follicle is implanted into the prepared sites with accuracy and care. Because the transplanted hairs retain their resistance to hair loss, they grow naturally and permanently in their new location.

For patients considering a hair transplant in Nottingham, FUE offers a reliable, long-term solution that restores density, improves hairline definition, and delivers results that continue to mature naturally over time. At our clinic, up to 3,200 individual hair grafts can be implanted in one day.

FUE Hair Transplant in Nottingham: a Step by Step Guide

Personalised Consultation & Planning

Your journey begins with an in-depth consultation with an experienced hair transplant surgeon. Your hair loss pattern, donor capacity, scalp health, and long-term goals are carefully assessed to determine whether FUE is the right option for you. Every plan is tailored, never templated.

Hairline Design & Surgery Day

On the day of your hair transplant in Nottingham, your surgeon will personally design a hairline that suits your facial structure, age, and anticipated future hair loss. Natural aesthetics and long-term sustainability are prioritised at every stage.

Once the design is finalised, local anaesthetic is administered to the donor area, preparing the scalp for extraction. This part of the procedure is performed by your hair transplant surgeon.

Extraction Phase

Individual follicular units are carefully removed using specialist micro-punch tools. The surgeon controls depth, angle, and spacing to minimise trauma, protect surrounding follicles, and preserve donor density. Grafts are then counted and prepared (into single, double, and triple grafts) by trained staff under sterile conditions.

Incision Phase

The surgeon creates precise micro-incisions in the recipient area. These incisions determine the final direction, angle, and density of hair growth; a critical factor in achieving a natural-looking result, particularly in the frontal hairline and temples.

Implantation Phase

Each graft is placed meticulously into the prepared sites by the surgeon. This level of control improves graft survival, ensures consistent density, and creates hair growth that blends seamlessly with your existing hair.

Aftercare, Follow-Ups & Long-Term Support

Following your FUE hair transplant in Nottingham, your recovery will be monitored through our structured aftercare programme. After your procedure, our surgeon will provide you with a recovery kit and aftercare instructions. You will also have free access to our recovery app.

Your recovery will be monitored through a structured follow-up consultations at: 2 weeks, 3, 6, and 12 months. These reviews allow our surgeon to assess your healing, monitor growth, and adjust aftercare if needed.

You’ll also receive a complimentary supply of hair loss medication (e.g. finasteride, minoxidil) after your FUE hair transplant. This prevents further hair loss from occurring and promotes continued hair growth for many years to come.

FUE Hair Transplant Recovery Timeline

At the Nottingham hair transplant clinic, we believe exceptional results not only depend on the surgery itself, but also on expert aftercare and ongoing hair preservation. That’s why we provide industry-leading aftercare. Here’s an outline of how your initial recovery period will look after a FUE hair transplant surgery with us:

First 7–14 Days

Mild swelling, redness, and small scabs are normal and usually resolve within the first week. Most patients return to desk-based work within 7 days, although working remotely can be beneficial where possible.

Weeks 2–8: Shedding Phase

Transplanted hairs commonly shed during this period. It’s a totally normal and expected stage known as hair transplant shedding. The follicles remain healthy beneath the scalp and begin preparing for new growth.

Months 3–18: Growth & Maturation

New hair growth typically starts around 3–4 months. Density and texture continue to improve up to 12–18 months, resulting in natural, mature results that integrate with your existing hair.

Benefits of a Surgeon-Performed FUE Hair Transplant

Choosing a surgeon-performed FUE hair transplant in Nottingham means placing your results, safety, and long-term appearance in expert medical hands. Unlike technician-led or high-volume clinics, every stage of your procedure is controlled by a qualified hair transplant surgeon, ensuring precision, accountability, and consistently natural outcomes.

This surgeon-led approach offers clear advantages:

  • Complete surgeon involvement from start to finish – every critical stage (hairline design, graft extraction, incision creation, and implantation) is personally performed by an experienced hair restoration surgeon, not delegated to technicians.
  • Superior hairline design and natural growth patterns – surgeon-planned hairlines take into account facial structure, age, and future hair loss, resulting in outcomes that look natural today and remain appropriate as you get older.
  • Higher graft survival and long-term density – careful handling, accurate depth control, and precise placement significantly improve graft survival, helping you achieve thicker, more reliable results.
  • Medically regulated, accountable care – your procedure is carried out in a CQC-registered clinic, under the responsibility of a GMC-registered doctor. This ensures a higher level of safety, ethics, and clinical governance.
  • Ideal for complex or corrective hair transplant cases – a surgeon-performed FUE hair transplant is particularly suited to advanced hair loss, limited donor supply, temple restoration, or patients requiring repair work from previous procedures.

To make high-quality hair transplant surgery in Nottingham more accessible, flexible finance plans are available, allowing you to spread the cost of treatment without compromising on surgical expertise or aftercare.

FUE Hair Transplant Cost in Nottingham

The cost of an FUE hair transplant typically ranges from £5,000 to £7,000, depending on graft numbers, hair loss severity, and procedural complexity. Procedures in this price range typically refer to hairline, crown, or frontal third hair transplants. The FUE method can also be used to perform eyebrow and beard transplants. Smaller cases start from £4,000.

A personalised quote is provided following your initial consultation. Flexible finance options are available. All you need to do is mention finance during your consultation, and our patient advisor will walk you through your options.

Hair Transplant Nottingham – FAQs

Your FUE hair transplant is personally carried out by one of our hair restoration surgeons. The team at the Nottingham clinic consists of Dr. Aziz Elgindi and Dr. Mohammed Ditta.

Most procedures are completed in a single day which typically takes around 6-8 hours. Larger cases may be staged for optimal results.

Up to around 3,000 grafts may be safely transplanted in one session, depending on donor hair density. Your surgeon will discuss an approximate graft count during your pre-surgery consultation.

Yes. Hairline placement and density are planned with future hair loss in mind to ensure age-appropriate results. The key to any successful FUE hair transplant is helping you attain a natural appearance and great hairline.

FUE can be suitable for both men and women, depending on the cause and pattern of hair loss. In most female pattern baldness cases, hair transplantation is rarely an option. However, FUE can be performed for hairline lowering, traction alopecia, and eyebrow surgeries.

In most cases, FUE is recommended over FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation). This is because FUE surgery doesn’t leave a lifelong linear scar on the donor area (as is the case with FUT). Strip surgery is usually recommended to Norwood 6+ hair loss cases, female, and transgender patients.

Neither FUE nor DHI is inherently better. They are both methods of implanting hair follicles, and outcomes depend on surgical planning and execution. Direct Hair Implantation (DHI) is a variation of FUE that uses a specialised implanter pen, while standard FUE involves placing grafts into pre-made incisions. The most suitable option depends on your hair loss pattern, graft numbers required, and the surgeon’s preferred technique for achieving natural results.

It was an outstanding experience from start to finish. Naturally, I was unsure on which organisation to choose for the procedure, but HSHTC came across as professional and caring, as well as having a wide range of availability. There are negative reviews on all businesses, and this drives customers like myself away. However, something told me this would likely be someone with unrealistic expectations, or not reading into the procedure as a whole. I chose to ignore the negatives and read the positives. Sara the coordinator was absolutely amazing! She outlined everything and made it clear of what is expected and what is not. After a great consultation, I was passed to the next stage of meeting surgeon Dr Ditta. He presented extremely knowledgeable and passionate about what he does, so I decided to go ahead with the procedure. The surgery day was expected to be a long, but rewarding day. It started with having to shave my head (mandatory requirement for this procedure). I’d say to anyone the thought is worser than the event, and to just do it for the positives that will follow. Dr Ditta and his team were extremely caring and sensitive, especially with briefing before any painful situations pre anaesthetic. After that, I was allowed to top up when requested and leave them to do what they do best. The day as a whole was enjoyable and interesting to speak to the team to learn more about the procedure and get to know them. Lunch was provided (yay). It was lovely of them to offer, and you definitely need to eat mid procedure to keep energy levels. At the end of the day, I was given clear instruction of how to have the best success rate. It was through a video and in person. If you have questions, ask as it’s what the team is there for. The first few days of recovery can be quite awkward and uncomfortable, but I’d recommend booking 2 weeks off work to fully recover and let the grafts set. Once you get use to the sleeping situation, it’s easy and a lovely break from reality (put pillows below your knees and stack below head for pure comfort!). The aftercare products was extremely useful and easy to use. The grafts will fall out after a few weeks, it’s expected and you’re told this plenty of times!! Having a healthy lifestyle makes your hair grow quicker and thicker, so swap your diet to good healthy hair foods. When your transplanted hair grows back, it’s an amazing feeling, but only the beginning. As the months pass by, you’ll notice a massive improvement. During this process, you’ll have regular aftercare and the chance to raise any concerns. I personally didn’t have any issues and was just grateful to still be in contact and told everything is going as it should. I’m 6 months post surgery and I’m seeing the benefits hugely, and it’s not even reached maximum results yet, as this is one year. Thanks for an amazing service!

Having given some time and thought about having a Hair Transplant, I contacted Harley street hair transplant clinics. The consultant (Sara) explained everything regarding the procedure with Dr.Ditta and the technicians. From the beginning, Dr.Ditta explained the days events and how the procedures would be done beginning with taking a photo of my head and showing me where the grafts would be taken from and where they would be placed. The procedures would be done and completed in two parts, with a lunch break in between. Once completed, Dr.Ditta went through the aftercare, explaining what to do each day for 10 days. I was given capsules, shampoo, sponge, neck pillow for sleeping with and information regarding how to look after my hair. Dr. Ditta and his team were welcoming and friendly ensuring I was looked after throughout both parts of the procedure. Sara maintained regular contact to make sure recovery was going well. The results were great, patience is needed as the grafts start to grow, and then you can see the results. Extremely happy with everything, from start to finish.

Would highly recommend! Everything went very smoothly, communication was excellent throughout. I travelled from Edinburgh to Manchester for the procedure and all travel and accommodation costs were covered. Dr Ditta explained everything clearly and delivered clear and detailed post-op instructions. I was delighted with the whole experience and results so far are very promising!

Overall, my experience at the clinic was positive. Dr. Ditta was exceptional — he made me feel comfortable and at ease throughout the procedure, and his professionalism was truly reassuring. However, I was disappointed with one member of the team who, in my opinion, did not fully follow health and safety protocols. She had her hair down without a surgical cap and was using her phone while wearing gloves, then proceeded to touch my hair without changing them. This raised concerns about hygiene and cross-contamination. Her manner was also not very pleasant, which made the experience less comfortable. Although I was initially worried about the risk of infection, I felt more at ease by the end of my visit. I hope the management reviews this matter to ensure that strict hygiene and professional standards are consistently maintained. Aside from this, I was very satisfied with Dr. Ditta’s care and look forward to seeing my results.

Dear Team. Following my hair transplant last Saturday I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the team, for making my journey as pleasant as possible. From the first consultation, to having my hotel booked, to the procedure itself, I couldn’t have been more impressed. Finally a big thank you to Doctor Ditta and the team, who were so kind when I felt unwell, making me drinking chocolate and reassuring me throughout the process. Add to this, their expertise and professionalism, what more can one ask for? I look forward to the final part of my hair transplant next year. Once again a big thanks to you all. Kind regards Keith Yates

Before the procedure I had online and face to face consultations with no obligations. These gave me all the information I needed and really put me at ease and gave me the confidence to proceed. Everyone was really knowledgeable and friendly and clearly very experienced. Booking the procedure was quick and easy and I got a date that suited me. The procedure itself went really smoothly I was able to put headphones in and listen to podcasts and was very comfortable. Afterwards I was given really detailed notes on what to do and what would happen and everything went exactly as planned. It was so reassuring knowing that advice was only a text message away and responses were always immediate. I'm two weeks post procedure now and everything has gone back to normal and the recovery is going just as planned. I'm so glad I did this and chose Harley Street Hair Transplant!

Great clinic with friendly and experienced team. I wanted my surgery done in the UK and found the clinic on Google. Process started with virtual consultations with patient advisor and then with the surgeon. FULL costs were given up front, with good finance options available. On the day I designed a new hairline with the surgeon and ended up getting about 1600 grafts iirc, which was good value for money. Clear pre- and post-op instructions given and recovery has gone as expected. Now waiting patiently for regrowth :) - Grant
