What is the FUT Hair Transplant Method?

Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) is a surgical hair restoration procedure in which a thin strip of hair-bearing scalp is surgically removed by the surgeon from the donor area (typically the back of the head). This strip is meticulously dissected under magnification into individual follicular units before being implanted into areas affected by hair loss.

FUT is most commonly used to treat male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia), particularly in patients with advanced hairline recession, crown thinning, and extensive scalp hair loss. It is also very popular with female patients who wish to maintain longer hair after their surgery.

Although FUT leaves a fine, linear scar at the back of the scalp, it is often the preferred option for patients who require maximum graft numbers and optimal follicle preservation. When performed by an experienced surgeon, FUT offers exceptional yield and long-term reliability.

Crucially, all FUT procedures in Nottingham are surgeon-performed. By this, we mean the hair transplant surgeon is responsible for: donor strip removal, wound closure, recipient area creation, as well as offering surgical oversight of graft preparation and implantation.

Who is Suitable For a FUT Hair Transplant?

While FUE and DHI are widely advertised, Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) remains a crucial option for certain patients. Particularly when performed by an experienced surgeon and technicians. You’re likely to be an ideal FUT candidate if you:

  • Have advanced male pattern baldness – FUT is highly effective for patients requiring 3,200+ grafts in a single session, where coverage and density take priority over scar visibility.
  • Have good donor density and scalp laxity – These factors allow the surgeon to safely harvest the maximum number of grafts with excellent long-term outcomes.
  • Wear your hair at a medium or longer length – Hair longer than a grade 3 easily conceals the linear donor scar, making FUT a popular choice for women and patients who do not wear very short hairstyles.

Your suitability for FUT surgery is assessed during a free consultation at our Nottingham clinic, followed by a pre-operative consultation directly with your surgeon. You’ll receive a fully personalised treatment plan, realistic expectations, and a transparent price quote.

FUT Hair Transplant Procedure in Nottingham

At our Nottingham hair transplant clinic, FUT surgery is led and performed by the surgeon. We don’t delegate to technicians. Before your procedure, you’ll meet your surgeon to finalise your hairline design and surgical plan. Local anaesthetic is then administered. You won’t feel any pain during the procedure.

1. Donor Strip Removal (Surgeon-Performed)

The surgeon carefully removes a narrow strip of DHT-resistant scalp from the donor area. The wound is closed using advanced suturing techniques designed to create a fine, discreet scar. Stitches dissolve naturally, meaning no return visit is required for removal.

2. Graft Preparation

Under high-powered microscopes, trained technicians dissect the strip into individual follicular units while the surgeon maintains full oversight to ensure graft integrity and quality control. Hair follicles are then categorised into “singles”, “doubles”, and “triple” grafts.

3. Recipient Site Creation (Surgeon-Performed)

This is one of the most critical stages of the procedure. The surgeon creates precise recipient sites using ultra-fine blades, carefully controlling angle, direction, and density to achieve a natural result.

4. Graft Implantation

Grafts are implanted strategically, with single-hair units placed along the hairline and multi-hair grafts positioned behind for density. Implantation is carried out by the surgical team under direct surgeon supervision.

Following surgery, you’ll receive a post-operative consultation with your surgeon, a full aftercare kit, and free access to our aftercare app.

Recovery & Hair Growth Timeline

Patients undergoing FUT surgery at our Nottingham clinic receive comprehensive aftercare, including scheduled follow-ups at 2 weeks, 3, 6, and 12 months

Initial healing typically takes 7–14 days. Mild tightness in the donor area is normal during the early recovery period due to strip excision. You will be provided with a comprehensive aftercare instructions to ensure recovery, protect transplanted grafts, and prevent infection.

Between 2–6 weeks, transplanted hairs shed. This is a normal and expected part of the process. New, permanent growth begins around 3–4 months, with continued thickening over time.

Final results are usually visible between 9–12 months, though crown procedures may take up to 18 months to fully mature. Patients are also provided with a complimentary supply of hair loss medication (e.g. finasteride and minoxidil) to protect existing hair and optimise long-term results.

Why Choose Our Nottingham FUT Hair Transplant Clinic?

So, if you’re based in West Bridgford, Beeston, or the East Midlands, then consider a FUT surgery at the Nottingham hair transplant clinic.

Why Choose the FUT Hair Transplant Technique Over FUE or DHI?

FUT remains one of the most reliable hair transplant techniques for patients who want maximum density and long-term results. While Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) and Direct Hair Implantation (DHI) are often marketed as newer options, FUT consistently delivers superior graft quality in the right candidates.

Unlike FUE and DHI, FUT allows a larger number of healthy grafts to be harvested in a single session. This results in thicker coverage, particularly for patients with moderate to advanced hair loss. If your male pattern baldness is around Stage 6 or 7 on the Hamilton-Norwood scale, then one of the only realistic surgical options is FUT.

FUT also preserves the donor area more effectively. Instead of removing follicles across the entire scalp, FUT focuses harvesting into one discreet area, helping maintain donor strength for future procedures. If you need multiple surgeries, then FUT may be the preferred method.

Although FUT leaves a fine linear scar, it is easily hidden beneath surrounding hair. For most patients, this is a worthwhile trade-off for better density, higher graft survival, and more predictable outcomes.

At our Nottingham hair transplant clinic, we recommend FUT because it works. Not because it’s fashionable. Every procedure is tailored to deliver natural results that last.

FUT Surgery Cost in Nottingham

The cost of an FUT hair transplant in Nottingham typically ranges from £5,000 to £8,000, depending on:

  • Number of grafts required

  • Donor density and hair characteristics
  • Hairline complexity

Your exact price is confirmed during your free consultation. Finance options are available, with just a £500 deposit required to secure your surgery date. You can discuss this in more detail with one of our expert patient advisors.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

FUT may be an excellent option if you have strong donor density, sufficient scalp laxity, and moderate to advanced hair loss. It is particularly effective for patients who require a higher number of grafts in a single procedure. At our Nottingham hair transplant clinic, suitability is always confirmed during a detailed consultation with the surgeon.

The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic, meaning you won’t feel pain during surgery. You may notice some movement or pressure, but this is generally well tolerated. Mild tightness or soreness in the donor area can occur afterwards, which is usually controlled with standard pain medication.

Most patients experience an initial recovery period of 10–14 days. At our Nottingham clinic, we use dissolvable stitches, so there’s no need to return for removal. Many patients return to desk-based work within a week, although working from home is recommended where possible. Final hair growth results typically develop between 9 and 12 months.

Yes. FUT hair transplants are considered a permanent solution. The follicles are taken from DHT-resistant areas of the scalp and retain this resistance once transplanted. While surrounding natural hair may continue to thin over time, the transplanted hair is designed to last long term.

It’s important to note that FUT does leave a permanent linear scar at the back of the scalp. This is usually hidden by surrounding hair but may be visible with very short hairstyles. Patients concerned about scarring may prefer to discuss FUE as an alternative.

FUT can be suitable for women in specific, carefully selected cases, such as stable hairline recession or reconstructive hair restoration. Women with diffuse thinning are not always suitable candidates. For this reason, all female patients are required to attend a pre-surgery consultation with the doctor before proceeding.

In cases of extensive or progressive hair loss, more than one procedure may be recommended to achieve the desired density while protecting the donor area. This forms part of a long-term treatment strategy, which will be discussed during your consultation at our Nottingham clinic.

It was an outstanding experience from start to finish. Naturally, I was unsure on which organisation to choose for the procedure, but HSHTC came across as professional and caring, as well as having a wide range of availability. There are negative reviews on all businesses, and this drives customers like myself away. However, something told me this would likely be someone with unrealistic expectations, or not reading into the procedure as a whole. I chose to ignore the negatives and read the positives. Sara the coordinator was absolutely amazing! She outlined everything and made it clear of what is expected and what is not. After a great consultation, I was passed to the next stage of meeting surgeon Dr Ditta. He presented extremely knowledgeable and passionate about what he does, so I decided to go ahead with the procedure. The surgery day was expected to be a long, but rewarding day. It started with having to shave my head (mandatory requirement for this procedure). I’d say to anyone the thought is worser than the event, and to just do it for the positives that will follow. Dr Ditta and his team were extremely caring and sensitive, especially with briefing before any painful situations pre anaesthetic. After that, I was allowed to top up when requested and leave them to do what they do best. The day as a whole was enjoyable and interesting to speak to the team to learn more about the procedure and get to know them. Lunch was provided (yay). It was lovely of them to offer, and you definitely need to eat mid procedure to keep energy levels. At the end of the day, I was given clear instruction of how to have the best success rate. It was through a video and in person. If you have questions, ask as it’s what the team is there for. The first few days of recovery can be quite awkward and uncomfortable, but I’d recommend booking 2 weeks off work to fully recover and let the grafts set. Once you get use to the sleeping situation, it’s easy and a lovely break from reality (put pillows below your knees and stack below head for pure comfort!). The aftercare products was extremely useful and easy to use. The grafts will fall out after a few weeks, it’s expected and you’re told this plenty of times!! Having a healthy lifestyle makes your hair grow quicker and thicker, so swap your diet to good healthy hair foods. When your transplanted hair grows back, it’s an amazing feeling, but only the beginning. As the months pass by, you’ll notice a massive improvement. During this process, you’ll have regular aftercare and the chance to raise any concerns. I personally didn’t have any issues and was just grateful to still be in contact and told everything is going as it should. I’m 6 months post surgery and I’m seeing the benefits hugely, and it’s not even reached maximum results yet, as this is one year. Thanks for an amazing service!

Having given some time and thought about having a Hair Transplant, I contacted Harley street hair transplant clinics. The consultant (Sara) explained everything regarding the procedure with Dr.Ditta and the technicians. From the beginning, Dr.Ditta explained the days events and how the procedures would be done beginning with taking a photo of my head and showing me where the grafts would be taken from and where they would be placed. The procedures would be done and completed in two parts, with a lunch break in between. Once completed, Dr.Ditta went through the aftercare, explaining what to do each day for 10 days. I was given capsules, shampoo, sponge, neck pillow for sleeping with and information regarding how to look after my hair. Dr. Ditta and his team were welcoming and friendly ensuring I was looked after throughout both parts of the procedure. Sara maintained regular contact to make sure recovery was going well. The results were great, patience is needed as the grafts start to grow, and then you can see the results. Extremely happy with everything, from start to finish.

Overall, my experience at the clinic was positive. Dr. Ditta was exceptional — he made me feel comfortable and at ease throughout the procedure, and his professionalism was truly reassuring. However, I was disappointed with one member of the team who, in my opinion, did not fully follow health and safety protocols. She had her hair down without a surgical cap and was using her phone while wearing gloves, then proceeded to touch my hair without changing them. This raised concerns about hygiene and cross-contamination. Her manner was also not very pleasant, which made the experience less comfortable. Although I was initially worried about the risk of infection, I felt more at ease by the end of my visit. I hope the management reviews this matter to ensure that strict hygiene and professional standards are consistently maintained. Aside from this, I was very satisfied with Dr. Ditta’s care and look forward to seeing my results.

Dear Team. Following my hair transplant last Saturday I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the team, for making my journey as pleasant as possible. From the first consultation, to having my hotel booked, to the procedure itself, I couldn’t have been more impressed. Finally a big thank you to Doctor Ditta and the team, who were so kind when I felt unwell, making me drinking chocolate and reassuring me throughout the process. Add to this, their expertise and professionalism, what more can one ask for? I look forward to the final part of my hair transplant next year. Once again a big thanks to you all. Kind regards Keith Yates

Before the procedure I had online and face to face consultations with no obligations. These gave me all the information I needed and really put me at ease and gave me the confidence to proceed. Everyone was really knowledgeable and friendly and clearly very experienced. Booking the procedure was quick and easy and I got a date that suited me. The procedure itself went really smoothly I was able to put headphones in and listen to podcasts and was very comfortable. Afterwards I was given really detailed notes on what to do and what would happen and everything went exactly as planned. It was so reassuring knowing that advice was only a text message away and responses were always immediate. I'm two weeks post procedure now and everything has gone back to normal and the recovery is going just as planned. I'm so glad I did this and chose Harley Street Hair Transplant!

Great clinic with friendly and experienced team. I wanted my surgery done in the UK and found the clinic on Google. Process started with virtual consultations with patient advisor and then with the surgeon. FULL costs were given up front, with good finance options available. On the day I designed a new hairline with the surgeon and ended up getting about 1600 grafts iirc, which was good value for money. Clear pre- and post-op instructions given and recovery has gone as expected. Now waiting patiently for regrowth :) - Grant
